Former UFC Heavyweight Pat Barry has announced his next two fights. On the MMA Hour and twitter today, Barry announced that he would return to the ring March 22 for a kickboxing fight at a WKA (World Kickboxing Association) event in Richmond, VA. He will follow that up with a fight for the world’s top kickboxing company Glory in May. As of right now, Glory does not have an event scheduled in May, though rumors are that Glory will be back in the US in May, possibly in Denver. As always, that Glory event will air on Spike TV.
This is a big signing for Glory. Barry is a former kickboxer who has competed in K-1, but more importantly, he’s a very well-known fighter to casual fans thanks to his run in the UFC. Barry was a mainstay of the UFC Heavyweight division from 2008 until his retirement from the sport earlier this year. He had an 8-7 MMA record, with all but 3 of those fights taking place inside the Octagon. He retired from MMA last month, citing his frustration with wrestling and a desire to get back to his roots of kickboxing.
Battles with the likes of Cheick Kongo, Stefan Struve, and Mirko Cro Cop endeared him to fans, as did his outsized personality. For Glory, he’s the perfect signing, as he both brings in more US fans, and reaches the MMA audience.
No word yet on his Glory opponent, but there is no shortage of good options for HD.
