A lightweight fight capped off the FS1 broadcast of the UFC 169 preliminary card as striker John Makdessi took on Alan Patrick in the feature bout. Patrick showed some flashy striking technique while mixing in clinch and takedown attempts. Makdessi stood his ground, shrugging off the clinch and getting off the mat while landing strikes at range. But,, it was Patrick who was given the nod by the ringside judges.
Patrick opened up the fight with a quick takedown attempt, but Makdessi wouldn’t be held down. Makdessi looked to land at range, but hesitant with the takedown threat. Undeterred by Makdessi’s striking credentials, Patrick through a spinning back fist and spinning head kick of his own. Neither fighter was able to land consistently through the first few minutes of the round. Patrick dove in for a takedown with a minute left. Makdessi was quick to get back up.
Through the first minute and a half of the second round the two 155 lbers stayed even trading shots on the feet before Patrick came in for a big takedown. Once again he couldn’t keep Makdessi down and they stood back up. Makdessi landed consistently as Patrick tried to close the distance. Patrick was able to open up a cut on the nose of Makdessi before the round ended.
Throughout the third round Patrick continued to try to land the big blow on Makdessi. The TKD black belt kept his cool landing strikes as Patrick came in. His shots weren’t especially powerful, but he landed consistently. Patrick was able to get through with a few of his blows then clinched up with just over a minute left in the fight. Referee Dan Miragliotta separated them from the clinch.
Alan Patrick won the unanimous decision (29-28 x 2, 30-27) over John Makdessi.
Makdessi was riding a three-fight win streak and 5-2 UFC record coming into the fight tonight. This was Patrick’s second bout inside the Octagon and he was looking to earn his second consecutive win.
