A lightweight fight opened up the PPV portion of UFC 169 as former WEC champion Jamie Varner fought Abel Trujillo. The two 155ers battle back and forth for just over seven minutes. Varner threatened with a choke in the first round, but took the worst of it on the feet. The second round was an all out brawl with Trujillo repeatedly rocked before landing the fight ending blow.
Both fighters came out swinging to start the first round. After spending the first two minutes winging hooks, Trujillo came in for the clinch and went for a trip. Varner countered it and ended up taking the back in the process. He transitioned from there into a north-south choke. Trujillo was finally able to escape and started throwing bombs when he got back to his feet. One more wild flurry from both fighters before the bell sounded.
The wild hooks on the feet continue in the second round. Trujillo was riding a clear advantage on the feet into round two, but he was the one who took the worst of it in round 2. He was rocked by a big left hook from Varner 90 seconds in. They both went wild and Varner shook him again. After going down to the mat, Trujillo was finally able to stand back up, but continued to eat big shots. Unblievably, he landed a knockout blow with his right hand that forced referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the fight.

Varner boasted a .500 record at 2-2 since making his UFC debut at UFC 146. Trujillo was came in as a late replacement with a 2-1-1 record inside the Octagon.
