Just a few years ago, UFC Lightweight contender, Josh Thomson was plagued with numerous career difficulties. Injuries were the biggest concern, which then branched off into inactivity. From there, financial problems would arise, stemming from that inactivity.
This past year has seen a dramatic turnaround for the 13 year veteran. After upsetting Nate Diaz in a surprising TKO victory in April of last year, he was then given the opportunity of a lifetime; a chance at current Lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis.
In an unfortunate set of circumstances, Pettis suffered an injury and is still on the sidelines, recovering from knee surgery. Thomson, not wanting to stay idle for any longer than necessary, opted to take another fight, and was matched up with former champ, Ben Henderson.
The two are set to fight this Saturday night in the main event of UFC On FOX 10. The match, set for five rounds, could be Thomson’s ticket back to a title shot with a win. In an interview with FOX Sports earlier today, UFC president, Dana White had this to say about who gets the next shot at the Lightweight belt:
Here’s the reality – if Thomson wins, he’s the next in line. Obviously Ben Henderson just lost very decisively in his last fight with (Anthony Pettis) and should Benson Henderson win, we’ll see what’s up with Gil (Gilbert Melendez).
Melendez is currently in contract negotiations with the UFC for a new deal, but White is optimistic the contract talks will be finished soon.
