Anderson Silva lost his middleweight title and his first fight ever inside the Octagon at UFC 162. On December 28, he got an immediate rematch against Chris Weidman for a chance to regain his belt. In the second round of their fight, Silva threw a leg kick that Weidman checked causing Silva’s fibula and tibia to break.
Silva underwent emergency surgery immediately after the fight. His rehab has been going well and ufc president Dana White says he’ll be off crutches within 30 days. For the first time since the unfortunate injury, Silva spoke to MMA Fighting about the outcome of the fight:
“I believe that, if you pay attention to these technical details, you will see that (checking the kick) was instinct, not something that he trained to do,” Silva said during an interview to Globo.
“No, I don’t think (Weidman should consider it a win). It was an accident. And I’m pretty sure I would have won the fight.”
Following the event, both Weidman and his team have held that he trained for the aggressive defense that caused the fight-ending injury.
Silva’s management has said they’re eyeing a superfight between him and former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre once they return to action.
Weidman will face Vitor Belfort for his second title defense. The UFC is aiming for either Memorial Day weekend or the 4th of July weekend in Las Vegas, NV for that fight.
