With former UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva recovering from surgery after snapping his leg in half against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 his management team apparently has some time on their hands, or they’re ambitious and thinking big or they’re just trying to keep his name in the Google searches.
And since it’s a desperately slow news day, I’m going to work with this one. Oh hell, Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre is also a dream fight I’ve been dying to see for years now.
So here’s the story, Silva’s management team of Jorge Guimaraes and Ed Soares were talking to MMA Junkie and here’s the dream bubbles they blew:
…the managers mused about a super- fight against Georges St-Pierre, if the former welterweight champ returns from a self-imposed hiatus. St-Pierre vacated his belt last month to deal with personal issues but suggested he would return.
“Don’t you think that’s an option?” Guimaraes told MMAjunkie when asked about Silva’s future.
“Man, if we were able to pull something like that off, it would be a win-win for everybody — the fans, the UFC,” Soares said in a separate interview. “I think that would be awesome.”
But for now, the reps will settle for Silva’s return to health. Guimaraes expects the fighter to begin physical therapy next week after stitches from the surgery come out this week.
Sure it’s not half the super epic once in a lifetime battle that it would have been when both men were the dominant champs in their respective division, but it would still be a fight that would get people talking and sell tickets and pay-per-views.
Silva, of course, went on an epic six-year, 16 fight undefeated streak in the UFC before dropping two straight to new champ Chris Weidman. GSP dominated the UFC’s Welterweight division, its toughest, from 2005 to 2013 but gave up the belt after a bruising split decision win over Johny Hendricks.
