On Saturday the UFC headed out to Singapore for the first time in company history with UFC Fight Night 34. The show went down at the Marina Bay Sands and drew a sold out audience of 5216. It also featured Royston Wee, the first ever Singapore native to enter the Octagon, who picked up a unanimous decision victory in his debut.
The main event of the card was a Welterweight tilt between the last Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine and South Korean Hyun Gyu Lim. Over the course of their five-round fight, Saffiedine worked Lim over on the feet, chopping him down with leg kicks throughout. By the final frame, Lim could barely walk, but still managed to rock Saffiedine in the final seconds before giving up the unanimous decision.
Longtime Japanese MMA favorite Tatsuya Kawajiri also made his UFC debut on the Singapore card. He struggled to take down fellow debutante Sean Soriano early in the first round, but took control once he did. To the joy of nostalgic JMMA fans, Kawajiri locked on the fight ending rear naked choke to clinch victory early in the second round.
