The UFC on Fox 9 main card opened with a Lightweight fight between Joe Lauzon and Mac Danzig.Danzig came out in plain white shorts with “Not for sale” printed on the back as a statement against the sponsors he chose not to pursue for the fight. After opening up a heavily bleeding cut in the second round, Lauzon got his hand raised in taking the unanimous decision over Danzig.
Lauzon looked to make it happen on the ground early with a quick takedown. He passed Danzig’s guard quickly into mount. After getting bucked he went for an armbar, but Danzig was eventually able to escape and end up on top. Lauzon was eventually able to escape without taking too much damage and hit another takedown in the closing minute.
The two worked their striking at range for the opening minutes of the fight with Lauzon looking to have slowed after the first. Both men landed some solid blows and kept it pretty even before Lauzon scored a takedown heading into the final two minuets. He followed up with elbows that tore open a cut on Danzig’s nose. He continued to target the cut then moved to mount with 30 seconds left. He went for an armbar but was unable to finish it before the bell.
Less than a minute in, the action was stopped after an accidental headbutt. Danzig worked the body on the feet trying to stay out of range of Lauzon’s counters. Joe caught him in the clinch with a trip and went right back to throwing elbows to reopen the cut. He moved past guard and into a mounted crucifix while punishing with more elbows. Transition to mount and he continues to bludgeon Danzig with elbows. He tried to set up the armbar from mount again and lost position. Mac couldn’t hold it and got reversed. Lauzon ended the fight on top.
