The preliminary card for UFC Fight Night 33 on FS2 closed out with Middleweight and Bantamweight fights. Caio Magalhaes outdid Nick Ring in a slow-paced decision win. Nam Phan made his 135 lb. debut against Takeya Mizugaki. While Phan put up a valiant effort and once again showed his resiliency, but wasn’t able to best the Japanese fighter.
Takeya Mizugaki vs. Nam Phan – Bantamweight
It was far from the worst beating Phan has taken in the Octagon, but Mizugaki was clearly the better man throughout the majority of their fight. Phan was able to work in some clean shot to the body in headed, but overall Mizugaki landed more and harder throughout the first two rounds. Phan managed to hurt his opponent in the third round, but it wasn’t enough to finish or win the decision.
Takeya Mizugaki defeats Nam Phan by unanimous decision (29-28 x 2, 30-28)
Nick Ring vs. Caio Magalhaes – Middleweight
As expected this was far from the most exciting fight of the night. ring took over early with a clear win of the first round. He outstruck Magalhaes on the feet, then did work on the ground later in the round. He rode that momentum into the second. He denied a takedown attempt from Caio and turned that into dominant position, unleashing elbows and submission attempts from mounted crucifix. Caio was able to hit a reversal and spent the rest of the round on top in guard. A gassed Ring was completely ineffective in the final round. He was stuffed on every takedown with the fight stalling out repeatedly with Magalhaes on top in sprawl position.
Caio Magalhaes scores the unanimous decision (29-28 x 3) over Nick Ring
