UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is in the news a lot because of the way he fights and the things he says. Recently it was because he said he’d like to retire before the age of 30. At the same media event (The Gentleman’s Expo in Toronto), Jones also said he’d be very interested in a superfight in 2014 – with the UFC’s heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez. Here’s what he had to say about Jon Jones vs Cain Velasquez (via Fox Sports):
“I’ve been really thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it,” Jones said. “I think it’ll be huge for the sport.”
He also stated that a full-time move to the heavyweight division “could happen within the next two years”. First up he’ll have to get through top light heavyweight contender Glover Teixeira sometime in early-to-mid 2014. He could also have to face Alexander Gustafsson again, the man he defeated at UFC 165 in his toughest fight to date. Still though, Jones hinted that a bout between him and Cain might not be so far away:
“I think it would be a really entertaining fight. He’s definitely the toughest guy in the division and he’s not that big, so I think it would be a really entertaining fight. Don’t be surprised if that happens sooner rather than later.”
Velasquez is coming off a big win over Junior dos Santos at UFC 166. He’ll probably face Fabricio Werdum next, but the when and where for that hasn’t been determined yet. No word if or when Jon Jones vs Cain Velasquez might ever happen.
