Coming up at UFC 167, Lightweight Donald Cerrone will be appearing in the Octagon for the 11th time since transitioning over from the WEC. He’s been by far the most active fighter from the now defunct promotion having gone 7-3 since his promotional debut in 2011. Despite the very respectable record with losses only to very high quality competition, Cerrone thinks it’s time for a change regardless of the outcome of his fight with Evan Dunham.

When speaking to the Denver Post on Monday, “Cowboy” announced his intention to drop weight and head to the Featherweight division:

“It was my idea,” said Cerrone, 30. “(UFC’s) response was, ‘As long as you do it healthy, it’s fine.’

“Right now, my diet, I can eat what I want. I’m not really disciplined on that side. But if I tighten up what I eat and train a little harder, I’ll be fine,” he said.

Cerrone’s also giving thought to his first fight at 145 lbs. He wants former multi-division champion B.J. Penn:

A great fight that I’d love is B.J. Penn,” Cerrone said. “That would be so awesome. He’s a veteran of the sport. He’s fought everywhere. I don’t know how many fights B.J. has left, so it’d be cool to get in there with a legend.

Before Cerrone has a chance for that fight, he’ll still have to get past Dunham on November 16 in Las Vegas, NV, and I highly doubt he gets that fight coming off a loss. Penn has his hands full, too. Following his stint as coach on TUF 19, he’ll face off against Frankie Edgar, who’s already beat him twice at Lightweight.
