The World Series of Fighting returned Saturday night for their latest event WSOF 6 at the Bank United Center in Coral Gables, FL. The headlining fight featured Welterweight Josh Burkman facing Steve Carl for the promotion’s first ever championship. Burkman was coming off former UFC contender and then top 10 Welterweight Jon Fitch at WSOF 3. Like Burkman, Carl is undefeated with WSOF and is coming off a first round submission win over Tyson Steele, also at WSOF 3.
Main Card
It was far from the most exciting fight, but a huge win for Carl regardless. Throughout the first three rounds it was a grinder’s affair, whether it was Carl or Burkmann on top. Then, in round 4, Carl caught Burkmann in a triangle and gave it everything he had. It was more than enough as he put Josh completely to sleep before the ref called the fight.
Marlon Moraes def. Carson Beebe via TKO at 0:32 of round 1
Moraes proved he was more than a single step above Beebe in their very short fight. Marlon slipped Beebe’s punches to land a vicious counter and take a quick TKO victory.
Jon Fitch def. Marcelo Alfaya by split decision
Fitch edged out the decision on two judges’ cards, but Alfaya didn’t make it easy. Alfaya got a takedown in round one that led to him threatening Fitch with chokes for the rest of the round. Fitch took the second round with more effective striking despite spending a lot of time defending a takedown against the cage for a lot of the round. Fitch took over in round three by outworking Alfaya on the feet to take the decision
Justin Gaethje def. Dan Lauzon by TKO at 1:40 of round 2
Gathje’s leg kicks were the story of this fight. From the opening bell he punished Lauzon with them until his opponent couldn’t stand. By the end of the first round, Lauzon could barely stand, but he still made it out for round two. Gathje hit him with a combo that sent him to the canvas.
