Speaking of pipe dreams…

44-year-old Boxing legend Roy Jones, Jr. is still talking about a potential boxing bout with former UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Jones was cageside for Silva’s epic upset loss to Chris Weidman at this year’s UFC 162 in Las Vegas. If Silva had defended his belt there were expectations that he and Jones would face off to build hype for a potential bout.

Jones spoke to John Dennan of Boxing Online News about his plans for a tune up bout against journeyman Bobby Gunn so he’ll be ready for Silva:

“He said that’s his lifelong dream. We’ve got to make that happen,” Jones said about Silva. “He’s a great striker and great defender.

“If [Silva] beats [Chris] Weidman, then we’ll do a boxing match which is what he wants to do. The Gunn fight would give me a tune up so I’m ready for the fight in case he beats Weidman. So if he beats Weidman I’ve got to be ready for it because he’s going to be coming for me and I want to be ready when he comes for me. I want to give him what he wants,” said Jones.

Not sure why Silva needs to notch a win against Weidman to face Jones as a Silva-Jones bout would purely be a freakshow spectacle with no sporting relevance on either side.

Jones had also been mentioned as a potential opponent for Rampage Jackson’s Bellator PPV debut but that organization elected to go with Tito Ortiz vs. Jackson instead.
