The UFC decided to open the UFC Fight Night 29 main card with an important bantamweight battle, and the fight delivered. Raphael Assuncao and T.J. Dillashaw threw everything they had at each other for 15 minutes, and it was a nail-biter right up to Bruce Buffer announcing the cards. When it was all said and done, Assuncao pulled out a split decision victory.
After Assuncao looked to counter for a little while to start the fight, Dillashaw shot in for a quick takedown. Assuncao quickly returned to his feet though. Assuncao with a right while Dillashaw nailed him with a head kick. Dillashaw jumped onto Assuncao’s back standing and looked to sink a choke. They went to the ground as Assuncao looked to escape TJ’s repeated squeeze attempts. He managed to escape and they went back to the feet.
The second started with a slower pace, but it was Assuncao firing early from some different looks. Assuncao caught a kick and clubbed Dillashaw with a left. Assuncao stuffed a guillotine and looked for a guillotine. Nothing there though and they got back up with two minutes to go. Assuncao put together another nice combo that finished with a beautiful right hook. Dillashaw looked for a takedown briefly got Raphael’s back. They finished on the feet.
Dillashaw missed with a jumping attack to open the final round and almost ended up on his back. He responded with a nice standing knee. Dillashaw was the one coming forward but neither man landed much over the firs half of the stanza. Dillashaw had a lot of blood on his face. Assuncaos scored with a big right hook and stuffed a takedown. Dillashaw returned fire with a left hook. Dillashaw scored with a right and looked for a trip, but they clinched up instead.
