Floyd Mayweather Jr. put on another boxing clinic last month (well … to everyone except C.J. Ross), handing Saul Alvarez his first loss as a professional fighter in one of the biggest PPV events in combat sports history. The next step for the world’s pound-for-pound best boxer was to find his next opponent for 2014, and a report from British newspaper The Daily Mail stated that Mayweather would face England’s Amir Khan.
The official announcement will be made in the next few days and Khan has already pulled out of his challenge to world welterweight champion Devon Alexander, scheduled for December 7 in New York, to ensure that his dream fight with Mayweather is not jeopardised.
Stephen Espinosa, head of sports for the giant Showtime cable TV network which bankrolls both men, says: ‘Floyd has seen off the tough, heavy punchers. It remains to be seen what he will do against extreme speed and I like the Khan fight very much.’
Khan (28-3) last fought on April 27th at a 142 lbs catchweight, defeating Julio Diaz by unanimous decision after suffering a 4th round knockdown. As much as Khan is a talented offensive boxer with a fast jab and good punching power, his chin is an unquestionable liability and has been his downfall in KO losses to Danny Garcia and heavy underdog Breidis Prescott.
However, Team Khan put out an official press release denying the report of Khan pulling out of his bout with Devon Alexander to face Mayweather.
Presumably if this fight were to happen it would be contested at 147 lbs (welterweight). But will we actually see Mayweather/Khan? Hopefully we find out soon. There hasn’t been any word on this potential bout from Mayweather himself.
