B.J. Penn’s last MMA fight was a lopsided unanimous decision loss to Rory MacDonald at welterweight. Many wondered whether or not we’d ever see him in another UFC fight. The UFC has confirmed that not only is Penn coaching opposite Frankie Edgar on season 19 of The Ultimate Fighter, but Penn is dropping to featherweight to take on Edgar one more time:
BREAKING: @FrankieEdgar and @bjpenndotcom will coach Season 19 of @TUFonFS1 and then fight at Featherweight next April! #Trilogy
— UFC Tonight (@UFCTonight) September 11, 2013
Edgar famously upset Penn to win the lightweight title at UFC 112, and then dominated him in the rematch at UFC 118 to send Penn back up to welterweight. Neither fighter is at lightweight anymore, with Edgar having lost a close FW title fight to Jose Aldo in February before his recent decision win over Charles Oliveira.
According to the UFC, Edgar and Urijah Faber were the original choices for TUF 19, but Edgar did not want to drop down to 135.
This is obviously huge news and a bit of a shocker that Penn is moving to featherweight AND that he’ll have a trilogy with Edgar. TUF 19 starts in January and will feature middleweights and light heavyweights.
