DANNY GARCIA vs. ERIK MORALES II
October 20, 2012
Saturday night’s undercard fight of Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse could easily headline a Showtime card – instead, we get it as an appetizer for Mayweather and Canelo. The undefeated Garcia is at times underrated. He’s s very skilled boxer with overlooked power who has defeated some tough opponents. One of those big names on his resume is Erik Morales, who Garcia defeated twice in 2012. Here is the second fight – an impressive Garcia victory to be sure. But also one that shows how he will lose on Saturday.
In this Morales fight, Garcia clearly shows off his greatest offensive strength: his combination work. When Garcia strings together his punches, he is a very tough offensive fighter. He mixes things up in the combinations beautifully, utilizing a wide variety of punches, overwhelming and ultimately stopping Morales along the way. Against Matthysse, Garcia may be able to similarly use combinations to outpunch and outwork his way to controlling the action.
The trouble is, Garcia goes very “all in” on his combinations, sacrificing defense along the way. Watch how exposed his head is throughout this fight, making him highly hit-able. Against the incredibly hard hands of Matthysse, Garcia can’t get away with that. It only takes one powerful counter from Matthysse, one shot delivered right through the combo and landing on Garcia’s chin, for Saturday’s fight to end.
In order for Danny Garcia to defeat Lucas Matthysse, he’ll have to use the combination based offense shown in this fight, while at the same time protecting his chin constantly. That’s a tall order, and one that I’m not sure Garcia is up for.
