UFC Featherweight phenom Conor McGregor entered his UFC Fight Night 26 bout vs. Max Holloway with an incredible degree of hype. While he did win that fight, he suffered a knee injury that will put him out of action for most of the next year. Early this morning, McGregor tweeted news that he had completed surgery to repair the injuries suffered in that August 17th bout.

The damage to his knee included an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain and meniscus tear. It is not uncommon to see a delay of 2-3 weeks before surgical repair of a torn ACL, and this is actually when the rehabilitation starts. The delay allows time to reduce swelling and minimize pain, and regain full range of motion in the knee. In addition, performing simple exercises for the quadriceps helps maintain control of these important muscles and prevent atrophy. This should help with Conor’s immediate post-operative recovery, especially with the important post-operative goal of normalizing his gait (walking) pattern.

McGregor is expected to be out of commission for the next 10 months as he begins his rehabilitation.
