Next weekend, boxing will see the biggest fight in years: Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez. The Mayweather vs. Alvarez PPV takes place next Saturday, September 14. Bloody Elbow will have fight coverage all week and live fight night coverage Saturday night.
This week, Floyd Mayweather’s payout for the fight was revealed, and it’s pretty incredible.
For Saturday’s fight with Canelo, the man nicknamed “Money” will make a lot of it – $41.5 million to be exact. That’s considerably up from the $32 million Floyd took home against both Robert Guerrero and Miguel Cotto in his last two outings, which is understandable given the more significant drawing power and threat of Canelo Alvarez.
That $32 million mark was previously the highest amount ever guaranteed in boxing purse money. This new figure of $41.5 million completely shatters the record.
One very notable aspect is that this figure represents only the guaranteed purse. Mayweather will also receive more payout based on PPV buys, and for this fight, that could be significant. The folks at Golden Boy are talking about Mayweather vs. Canelo setting a new PPV record, surpassing the current record holder of Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya, which brought in 2.44 million buys. Personally, I don’t see this hitting that number, but it should do comfortably in the 1.5-2 million buy range.
As a point of comparison, Mayweather vs. Cotto sold 1.5 million buys. When Floyd’s PPV cut was added to his $32 million guarantee, he ended up with roughly $45 million for that fight, meaning he will easily top $50 million Saturday – perhaps even getting closer to $60.
Canelo’s purse has yet to be disclosed, but current rumors have him making roughly $10-$12 million for the guarantee. Canelo made $2 million for his fight with Josesito Lopez; his purse for his most recent fight with Austin Trout was not disclosed.
