Following Glover Teixeira’s win over Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28, it was announced that Teixeira would be placed at the top of the queue to face the winner of the upcoming Jon Jones versus Alexander Gustafsson bout.
Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, will look to successfully defend his title for the sixth time when he meets Gustafsson on September 21 in the main event of UFC 165. If Jones does win that fight, he will break the tie he is in with Tito Ortiz for most successful title defenses in UFC light heavyweight history.
A victory would also extend Jones record UFC light heavyweight winning streak to ten. The only blemish on Jones’ 18-1 record is a 2009 disqualification loss to Matt Hamill. Jones was disqualified for delivering illegal 12-to-6 elbow strikes to the grounded Hamill.
When news broke about Teixeira getting the next shot at the title, Jones was asked on twitter what his feelings were about his potential opponent. The champion replied:

Jones faced Jackson in his first defense of his light heavyweight title. That September 2011 fight ended with Jackson tapping to a Jones rear naked choke at the 1:14 mark of the fourth round. It was the first time Jackson had been submitted in the UFC, and the first time he was submitted since Kazushi Sakuraba used a rear naked choke to end his 2001 Pride FC fight against Jackson.
Teixeira (22-2) is on a twenty-fight winning streak overall and he is 5-0 in the UFC. He is currently ranked second in the division behind top-ranked Gustafsson.
