Currently ranked #3 in the UFC Welterweight division, Rory MacDonald has been on a tear. He’s now strung together 4 consecutive victories with the most recent coming as a one-sided decision over UFC veteran B.J. Penn. His only career loss came at the hands of former contender Carlos Condit in only his second UFC bout. With a solid record and the hype machine behind him, talk of Rory as a future contender has persisted. However, there was always the question of whether or not he’d fight TriStar teammate and 170 lb. king Georges St. Pierre.
MacDonald joined the TriStar team following his loss to Condit. In his 3 years with the Montreal-based gym, Rory has befriended the Welterweight champ and told the NY Post that he’s not looking to fight him:
No, me and Georges aren’t fighting. When we get to that point, me and Georges and our coaches, we’ll come to a solution,” MacDonald said. “When we get to the road, we’ll cross it. We’re not gonna fight.
Rory’s decision not to fight GSP puts a big question mark on his future in the division should he win his next fight. He’s scheduled to face off against Jake Ellenberger in the co-main event of this Saturday’s UFC on Fox 8. If Rory comes out victorious he’ll be the most qualified challenger to St. Pierre’s throne. Of course, Georges still has the heavy task of beating Johny Hendricks in November at UFC 167. So, this could all become a non-issue.
