This weekend may be light on MMA, but there’s still some quality combat sports action to be had, particularly for fans of the stand-up game. Saturday night features the Showtime Boxing clash between Adrien Broner and Paulie Malignaggi as well as a major event for kickboxing fans.
This Saturday, June 22, Glory presents Glory 9 New York, live from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Kickboxing fans will remember that K-1 talked about running a big event in New York last year, but it never happened, making this easily the biggest kickboxing event to come to US soil in years.
Glory 9 New York will take place live Saturday June 22. Prelims start at 6:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. PT, with the main card airing at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT. The show will be available as a live stream for $20, and you can access the live stream right here at Bloody Elbow – check out the video at the top of this page, which will be live Saturday night.
The featured fights on the card are an intriguing pair of Heavyweight fights, plus a one night tournament. In a Heavyweight clash, Rico Verhoeven faces Errol Zimmerman. Zimmerman is a K-1 veteran who had big success back in 2008, then had a rough run for a few years. He had a great run in 2011/2012, once again finding his power and winning 8 in a row, all but 1 via KO. He’s now coming off back-to-back losses to Semmy Schilt and Jamal Ben Saddik, so hopefully can regain his footing here. Verhoeven is a quality fighter with a ton of promise that has never fully been realized. At times, he looks great, scoring wins over the likes of Hesdy Gerges. At other times, he doesn’t quite reach that potential. This should be a close one, though I like Zimmerman by KO.
The other big Heavyweight fight sees Daniel Ghita take on Brice Guidon. Ghita is the #3 Heavyweight in the world right now – a powerful KO machine with some of the most brutal leg kicks you will see in any sport. Guidon is a game opponent, but he’s the heavy underdog against the deceptively nasty Ghita.
Also on the card is 1 one night, 8 man Light Heavyweight tournament featuring Tyrone Spong. Spong is the favorite in the draw, though it’s a solid tournament all around. Best bet of a spoiler is Danyo Ilunga, the Remy Bonjasky trainee with a great degree of technical skill. Cross your fingers for a Spong vs. Ilunga final, which would be great.
