Ray Sefo’s promotion returned Friday night with World Series of Fighting 3. WSOF returned to Las Vegas, NV for this one at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. In the main event, Former UFC contender and perennial Welterweight #2 Jon Fitch returned to fighting for the first time since his release in February. Fellow UFC veteran Josh Burkman welcomed to the WSOF cage in a rematch of their 2006 bout. Check out the full results below.
Main Card results:
Jon Fitch vs. Josh Burkman
Fitch came out looking to cut off the cage and look for the takedown. Burkman had other ideas though. He blasted Fitch with a short right hand that rocked Fitch. When Jon came up looking for the takedown, Burkman grabbed a guillotine choke and fell back into half-guard. When he felt Jon go limp he tossed him to the side and stood up before referee Steve Mazzagatti had a chance to stop the action.
Josh Burkman beat Jon Fitch via technical submission with a guillotine choke at (0:41) of round 1.
Steve Carl vs. Tyson Steele
Steele tried to catch the Former Bellator Welterweight off guard early with a wide variety of kicks, but they failed to hit their mark. Carl turned the tables on Steele after a missed kick with a straight right counter and followed up with a takedown. It took him only a few seconds after that to wrap up the arm-in rear naked choke and force Steele to tap.
Steve Carl submitted Tyson Steele with a rear naked choke at (1:32) of round 1.
Jacob Volkmann vs. Lyle Beerbohm
Like Fitch, Volkmann had his first fight since his UFC release in a Lightweight bout against former Strikeforce fighter Lyle Beerbohm. Throughout the first two rounds, Beerbohm completely failed to implement his game. He continually put Volkmann against the cage but never really came close to taking him down. Volkmann had a good spot in round one where he threatened a rear naked choke, but lost position when he missed the submission attempt. Volkmann completely took over in round 3 when he took Beerbohm’s back early and spent the remainder of the round threatening with the RNC. Overall, the fight was a complete dud.
Jacob Volkmann defeated Lyle Beerbohm by Unanimous Decision (30-27 x 2, 29-28).
Justin Gaethje vs. Brian Cobb
Undefeated Lightweight Justin Gaethje welcomed UFC one-timer Brian Cobb to WSOF’s decagon. Gaethje took control early in the first round with powerful strikes, but he gave up a takedown after an ill-advised flying knee. Cobb dominated the rest of the round from back mount as he punished Gathje with strikes and submission attempts. Gaethje got back into the fight in round 2 but relied more on his punches than his kicks. But, it was the third round where Gaethje impressed. He mixed in a lot violent leg kicks with his power shots and forced referee Steve Mazagatti to stop the fight.
Just Gaethje defeated Brian Cobb via TKO (leg kicks) at (2:19) of round 3.
