It’s no secret that the UFC has been fighting a long battle against the Culinary Union. Most recently, the CU has looked to damage the UFC’s image through letters and reaching out to human interest groups decrying the behavior of some of their fighters. The most notable cases are of course Jeremy Stephens and Abel Trujillo at UFC On Fox 5 and Quinton Jackson at UFC On Fox 6. On top of that, UFC president Dana White credits the union for keeping MMA out of New York in 2013.
In response to the campaign against their product Zuffa has started a website called The Truth About Culinary 226, to explain the situation. The front page of the site tells fans:
The Culinary Union represents workers in the hotel, food service and gaming industries. For more than a decade, the Culinary Union has attempted to unionize the employees of Station Casinos, a gaming and entertainment company in Las Vegas, Nevada that is majority-owned by Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta, who are also majority owners of the UFC.
Founded over three decades ago, Station Casinos prides itself on its treatment of its 12,000 employees. Station Casinos was named one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” four years in a row – an honor no other gaming company has ever received.
The Culinary Union has targeted Station Casinos because the company refuses to agree to a “card check” process whereby the Culinary Union may become the representative of its employees without being elected as such through a secret ballot election. Rather than simply following the secret ballot election process that U.S. federal law provides, the Culinary Union’s management has instead waged a dishonest campaign to pressure Station Casinos to capitulate to its demands. As part of that campaign, the Culinary Union has been engaging in harassment tactics that target all of the business interests of the Fertittas, including Station Casinos and the UFC.
The site appears to be a direct response to the Culinary Union’s site Unfit For Children which features the steps they’ve taken in their anti-UFC campaign. As the Fertitta-owned Station Casinos doesn’t appear anywhere close to embracing unionization any time soon, expect to see more from the Culinary Union and responses from the UFC.
