UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen live results and play-by-play for PPV main card

A long awaited Light Heavyweight showdown will take place tonight at UFC 159 when Jon Jones defends his light heavyweight title against Chael Sonnen. The show kicks off with a couple of fights streaming live on Facebook (6:35 p.m. ET), continuing to the FX broadcast (8 p.m. ET) through the five fight main card on pay-per-view (10 p.m. ET). And we’ll have live results and thoughts right here on Bloody Elbow all night long.

Aside from the evening’s main event of Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen, the co-main event sees another trash talk-fueled bout between Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher. A Heavyweight bout is also on the main card with Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson.

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes in a Light Heavyweigght bout and Jim Miller vs. Pat Healy in a lightweight bout round out the evening’s main card.

Jim Miller vs. Pat Healy – Round 1 – Healy with e left and Miller with one of his own. Miller with a good jab and a hard left to the body and then a leg kick and a left hand. Another cracking left by Miller and he looks good. Miller with another leg kick. Hard combo by Miller and he slams Healy. Elbows by Miller from the top. Healy tries for an omoplata and Miller escapes and starts looking for a crucifix. Miller jumping for an arm now. Miller gives up on it and lands a punch as they’re getting up. Healy with a body kick and he’s looking for a takedown and he gets it. Miller goes for a leg and Healy lands some good punches and is on the back. Miller stands and Healy slams him. Healy has the back still. Miller spins and is on top landing a hard elbow. Miller with a flurry of punches that would have finished it if the round hadn’t ended. Healy stumbles to his corner. 10-9 Miller.

Round 2 – Miller with a good standing elbow and he throws a good leg kick. Miller with another good shot and Healy gets the takedown. Healy working well from on top now. Miller working a leg up but Healy is powering through it. Healy really working on him. Healy is beating up on him pretty damn hard now. Healy takes the back and he’s looking to lock in a rear naked choke, Healy uses it to get to mount and Miller kicks off the cage to escape. 10-9 Healy.

Round 3 – Hard right by Miller lands and Helay shoots and Miller stuffs it. Miller with a good uppercut. Hard body shot by Miller and a crisp elbow. Leg kick by Miller briefly kncks Healy down. Knee by Healy looks like it landed low. Healy gets the takedown. Healy does some good work with punches and now landing some elbows. Healy is just grinding away now. Healy gets a rear naked choke locked in after taking the back and Miller goes out. Wow, what a performance from Healy. Pat Healy wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 3.

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes – Round 1 – Vinny comes out throwing kicks and Davis throws some pnches to the body and a few kicks of his own. Vinny with some leg kicks. Vinny clinches up with him. Davis opening up a bit and he lands a hard head kick and Vinny is badly hurt. Another left hand and Vinny is hurt badly. Davis is backing off way too much. Vinny gets a takedown and almost has the back but Davis manages to escape and get back to his feet. 10-9 Davis.

Round 2 – Vinny is out early throwing a lot of strikes and Divis takes a bit to find his range but then starts letting his hands go and he gets the back standing and gets the takedown but then lets Vinny back up. Good combination punching by Davis. Vinny is still working solid leg kicks but Davis’ combination punches are landing solidly to the head of Magalhaes. Davis just outworked him that round 10-9.

Round 3 – It’s a lot more of the same early in round three. Davis is throwing decent simple combinations, Vinny has nothing but leg kicks really. 10-9 Davis.

Official scorecards: 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. Phil Davis wins by unanimous decision.

Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson – Round 1 – Brief trade and Roy pushes Kongo into the cage. As they’re actively working, the ref restarts them. Nelson lands a bomb and Kongo goes down and this one is over. Just a big ol’ right hand to the ear. Roy Nelson wins by KO (punch), round 1.

Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher – Round 1 – Belcher misses a kick. Bisping throws a leg kick that gets checked. Belcher with a body kick and a low blow which Bisping doesn’t want the action stopped from. Belcher still throwing kicks. Bisping lands a few punches and Belcher with a body kick. Bisping still trying to work out the distance with Belcher throwing so many kicks. Good right hand by Bisping. Right hand by Belcher lands hard. Right hand by Bisping. Bisping gets poked in the eye but is okay to continue and he lands a few punches. Jab by Bisping and a right hand. 10-9 Bisping but a close round.

Round 2 – Bisping lands a good right hand and a good jab early in the round. Bisping with a head kick and a punch that both land. Belcher with a jab. Hard right hand by Bisping. Leg kicks from both so far this round. Bisping getting the better of the exchanges this round and he lands another right. Bisping is still just outlanding him, he’s not hurting him so far, but he’s certainly outlanding him. Belcher shoots for a takedown, can’t get it but does land a left and a right. Belcher opens up a bit and Bisping lands a big combination at the end of the round. 10-9 Bisping.

Round 3 – Bisping gets in with a good right and then another good overhand right that gets in. Leg kick by Bisping and another right hand. Bisping is outworking him again. Bisping with a nice combination ended with a hard right hand. And again he lands a big right. Nice four punch combo by Bisping and he’s wearing him out now. Belcher shoots again and it’s stuffed with ease. Two punches for Bisping land. Bisping with an accidental eye poke and Belcher drops to the mat. His eye is bleeding. This doesn’t look good and the fight is over.

Official scorecards: 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. Michael Bisping wins by unanimous technical decision.

Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen – Round 1 – Sonnen runs out and throws some punches and Jones takes him down. Sonnen gets up and Sonnen lands some punches in the clinch. Jones pins him to the cage and Sonnen throws some knes. Sonnen gets taken down again and Jones lands some big elbows and Sonnen stands up with Jones on his back. Jones working for takedowns and Jones lands some uppercuts and elbows. Jones working punches to the body. Jones with a slam takedown again. Jones just grinding on him now with punches and elbows. More big elbows and knees to the body. Jones is swarming with punches and that’ll do it. Jon Jones wins by TKO (punches, knees, elbows and everything else), round 1.

Jones had a nasty broken toe, he almost lost that fight on an injury TKO had the ref seen it between rounds.
