In the UFC On Fox 7 co-main event, Daniel Cormier made his UFC debut against former Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Mir hadn’t been inside the Octagon since losing his last title shot at UFC 146. After the final bell, the former Olympian Cormier maintained his undefeated record with a unanimous decision victory.
It only took a single minute for Cormier to trap Mir in the clinch against the cage. He alternated seamlessly between clinching and working combos to the body. It wasn’t until the last minute of the round that Mir escaped the clinch. He threw a spinning back kick, but it didn’t land solidly.
Cormier tried a high kick early in the second before coming in to tie Mir up in the clinch again. They separated on a couple occasions, but Daniel’s clinch game was the deciding factor in this round as well. Frank couldn’t strike from range without getting tied up and Cormier took those opportunities to land solid shots to the head and body.
After giving up two rounds on the judges’ cards, Frank Mir came out firing kicks in the final round. He landed some nice shots, but still found himself defending Cormier’s clinch game and eating hooks. Referee Herb Dean separated them. Another kick from Mir and another clinch from Cormier. Despite Daniel landing blows, Dean separates them again. Mir didn’t give up and came at Cormier in the closing seconds, but it wasn’t enough.
