The Ultimate Fight 17 culminated tonight with Uriah Hall vs. Kelvin Gastelum. Hall’s reputation preceded him, as UFC president Dana White hyped the season saying that all the other guys feared him. He certainly delivered in action with 3 consecutive KO victories, including an incredible spinning backkick KO in the first round of the tournament. Gastelum came through with less praise, but still finished all 3 of his tournament fights.
Hall looked supremely confident in round 1. He tried to show off with his back against the fence and ate a few shots from Gastelum because of it. It didn’t take long after that for Gastelum to score a takedown and win the round from top position.
Hall looked more composed in the second round, but still gave up an early takedown. He made it hard for Gastelum to land any clean shots, but still lost a lot of time. He reversed the position and landed some solid strikes before Kelvin got up. Uriah hit a trip into half guard. Kelvin got back up only to be suplexed by Hall.
Third round opened with a low blow landed by Hall. When the action restarts, Uriah continued to oversell his counterstriking before giving up a takedown. He scrambled quickly though and hit a reversal. Despite blows landed by Hall, Gastelum got up looking no worse for wear. Lot of feints from Hall, but Kelvin landed a few solid strikes before hitting the double leg. Crazy scramble in the closing seconds with Hall ending up on top.
Kelvin Gastelum got the split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) win over Uriah Hall.
