At World Series of Fighting 2 last weekend in Atlantic City, Andrei Arlovski and Anthony Johnson met in a main event fight that saw Arlovski suffer a broken jaw late in the first round. But was it due to a timekeeping error? Arlovski’s camp, Jackson’s MMA, issued a statement saying that the round went on well over the scheduled five minutes and it was during this extra time that Arlovski suffered the injury. Here’s the statement from their Facebook page:
The NJ athletic commission was worried about the World Series of Fighting getting a new canvas and new corner pads for the cage they almost canceled the fight Saturday night. Unfortunately they forgot to get a time keeper that was trained properly. 1st round 5min 8 sec in the Andrei fight. A devastating blow was landed after the 5min mark. It’s amazing how so much time is spent with over regulating but the simple things can cost dearly.
By all video account, it certainly seems to be true. Check out this gif that shows it pretty clearly – note the countdown clock in the corner:
The New Jersey State Athletic Commission has not address the concerns yet, which certainly have some validity. It’s possible that the bout could be flipped to a No Contest.
