Despite some complications with the cage, the second event for the World Series of Fighting went off tonight. The show took place at the Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Prior to the Heavyweight main event between Anthony Johnson and Andrei Arlovski, four undercard fights were featured on NBC Sports Network. Take a look back at the action and watch the highlights GIF’d up by Zombie Prophet.
Main Card:
Marlon Moraes def. Tyson Nam TKO, round 1 (2:55)
The fight got off to a slow start as each Bantamweight tried to find their range oon the feet. Each man landed some one-off shots but nothing substantial. Then, Moraes unleashed a vicious right head kick that clipped Nam above the ear. Nam fell to the mat and covered as Moraes pounced on him. Marlon didn’t take it easy on his cowering opponent and unleashed brutal ground and pound until he was pulled off by the ref.
David Branch def. Paulo Filho via unanimous decision (30-27 x 2, 30-26)
There was a time when Filho was one of the best Middleweights on the planet. 2013 is not that time. He gave up an early takedown to Branch in the first and was ineffective from the bottom throughout the round. Branch landed solid shots to the body and head while commentator Bas Rutten rambled semi-coherently.
The beginning of the second round saw Branch hurting Filho on the feet before hitting a takedown. The action slowed for a second with a clinch against the cage and the ref separated them. A quick takedown from Branch led to him getting a mounted crucifix and reeling off unanswered shots. Branch was frustrated by the lack of stoppage and basically rode out the rest of the round from dominant position while landing ground and pound.
Right back to the ground to start round three and it’s just sad at this point. Branch made a couple attempts to finish, but Filho covered up just well enough to avoid the stop.
Josh Burkman def. Aaron Simpson via KO, round 1 (3:04)
Aaron Simpson started this Welterweight fight as expected securing the clinch in about 30 seconds. Burkman wasn’t deterred as he reversed and escaped. That would be the end of Simpson’s success in the fight. Burkman started finding his range and repeatedly blasted Aaron with straight punches any time he tried to get inside. He finished the fight with a huge knee to the head after Simpson fell back against the cage rocked.
Justin Gaethje def. Gesias Cavalcante via TKO (doctor’s stoppage), round 1 (2:27)
The Lightweights came out ready to brawl. Cavalcante tried to set up a counter game early, but Gaethje landed the first big blow with a right uppercut. JZ recovered for a minute, but ended up eating punches and elbows with his back against the fence. The ref stopped the action for the doctor to check a cut on Cavalcante’s head. The doc stopped the fight revealing a deep gash.
