After two previously promised shots against Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, Nick Diaz is finally getting his opportunity to contend for the title. A torn MCL forced St. Pierre from their last scheduled bout at UFC 143 and Nick faced Carlos Condit instead. Condit won the Interim belt via controversial decision, but gave up a unanimous decision to St. Pierre at UFC 154 in the title unification bout.
According to UFC president Dana White, GSP specifically requested Diaz for his next title defense. So now the two are scheduled to face off at UFC 158 on March 16. With tickets going on sale on January 26, the UFC has scheduled a press conference featuring the headlining fighters on Wednesday, January 23.
Of course, the scheduled press conference begs the question: Will Nick Diaz show up? As most will already know, Diaz lost his first chance to fight St. Pierre when he refused to attend this same type of presser before UFC 137. Dana has already made it clear that, while he does give Diaz leniency in some areas, “he needs to show up to the press conference.”
