Ronda Rousey: Georges St. Pierre is popular because he’s ‘good-looking’ and Canadian

UFC women’s bantamweight champion has a well-deserved reputation for just saying what she thinks, and that trend continued recently. In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal, Rousey was asked about a variety of subjects including judo, her “bad girl attitude”. But without a doubt, the most interesting comments she made were in reference to the UFC welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre.

GSP is, of course, immensely popular in the MMA world. He has taken a lot of criticism for his lack of finish over the past few years though, and Rousey was quick to characterize him as “boring”. She said as much last year as well. She was very respectful towards him, and said she had nothing against him personally. But she just doesn’t like to watch his fights.

She then brought up the fact that people say she wouldn’t have got as far as she has without being attractive, and turned the tables on it by saying St. Pierre was the same way. She said that if he wasn’t “really good looking” and “really Canadian” (since Canadian fans are so patriotic), that he’d be an unknown.

I guess she has a point – Canadians are fanatical about repping their own, and GSP might not be as popular if he looked like an ogre. But 18 UFC wins (including eight finishes) and a gaggle of successful title defenses have also helped him because the biggest PPV draw in the company.

Rousey will defend her title in the main event of UFC 157 against Liz Carmouche, while GSP defends his against Nick Diaz in the main event of UFC 158.
