The scales started to give fighters trouble early at the UFC on Fox 5 weigh ins. First, Lightweight Henry Martinez tipped the scales at 158.8 on his first attempt to weigh-in. Even with the one pound grace for non-title fights he was well over the limit. Then, Raphael Assuncao came in just over Bantamweight limit at 136.4 pounds.
After that, it looked like everything was going to run smoothly until Lightweight contender Nate Diaz stepped up. He looked confident on the scale even after Joe Rogan read his weight as 155.6. As Nate should have known, there is no grace for title fights. UFC president Dana White wasted no time in pulling Diaz to the side to explain the issue. Nate and Henderson did their face off and Diaz went to lose the extra weight.
He came back shortly after to try again but had only lost .4 pounds. In the meantime, Bendo assured Ariel Helwani that he didn’t care if Diaz made weight, he was ready to “fight him and beat him up” regardless. Fortunately for the scrappy Stocktonite, Diaz successfully made weight on his third attempt.
Raphael Assuncao was also able to make weight. He hit the 136 lb. limit on his second attempt and is all set to fight Mike Easton tomorrow. Henry Martinez went another route. He chose not to make an additional attempt to make the Lightweight limit and forfeit 20% of his fight purse to Daron Cruickshank.
