Jose Aldo’s reign as featherweight champion in the WEC and then the UFC has been an impressive one. Aside from some rocky moments late against Mark Hominick it has been smooth sailing for Aldo as he has beaten men like Mike Brown, Urijah Faber, Kenny Florian and Chad Mendes with ease.
At UFC 156, Aldo will defend his title against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in what looks to be the stiffest test of his UFC career. But the fight will be about more than defending his crown, it will also be a chance to see if it’s time for a move up in weight (via MMA Fighting):
“I’ve considered going to lightweight,” said Aldo. “As soon as my trainer decides that I can go up, then I will. This fight with Edgar will be a turning point. If I can win [against] him well, then I can prove that I can go [to lightweight].
“He has a very strong reputation thanks to destroying several opponents,” Aldo continued. “That’s the motivation for me to face him and that will be probably my last biggest challenge [at featherweight].”
While fights with Erik Koch (a bout that has fallen through previously) or Ricardo Lamas are still at least mildly interesting and a fight with Chan Sung Jung probably the biggest “money” fight in the division after Aldo/Edgar, it would seem that the most interesting challenges for Aldo are at 155.
Is there anyone on earth who wouldn’t want to see a fight like Jose Aldo vs. Nate Diaz or Aldo vs. Ben Henderson?
