Mark Hominick and Pablo Garza both had their backs against the wall entering their UFC 154 featherweight bout, but it was Garza that emerged victorious. After almost finishing the fight with a monster body shot in the first, Hominick fell victim to a Garza takedown in the second and third rounds, and Garza rode out both rounds on top with steady ground and pound that cut Hominick up badly. The scores were 29-27, 30-26, and 29-28.
Hominick came forward right away, and both men landed some decent shots quickly. Hominick was working nice combinations while Garza was mixing up his striking with kicks and knees. Garza looked for a takedown but got hip tossed by Hominick. Garza immediately locked up a dangerous-looking armbar, but Hominick slipped out. Hominick dropped Garza with a huge shot to the body, and followed up with knees and more body work. Garza recovered though, got up, and immediately landed a big right that cut Hominick badly. Garza came after the Canadian and battered him against the cage, but Hominick fired back. Great first round.
Garza tried to throw a huge jumping spin kick that missed. Hominick went back to the body right away. Garza went for a takedown, and Hominick tried to roll right over the top of him in a cool sequence. Garza ended up in Hominick’s guard and landed some punches. Hominick looked to attack from the bottom while Garza worked some elbows. Garza opened up another cut and Hominick was bleeding badly. Garza pounded away for the rest of the round.
Hominick opened up the third well, closing the distance and landing combinations. Garza got a big takedown though. Hominick looked for an omoplata from the bottom, while Garza worked with elbows and short punches. Graza maintained position for over three minutes before Hominick got up, but he went right back down. Hominick looked for a hail mary sub, but it wasn’t there.
Garza broke a two-fight losing streak with the victory, while Hominick has now lost four bouts in a row.
