Shane Carwin has partially torn ligaments in knee, hopes to return in February

UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin is out of his TUF 16 Finale fight with Roy Nelson, but his manager says his injury isn’t as severe as Dana White made it out to be. Yesterday, White tweeted that Carwin “blew out his knee”, but Jason Genet explained the nature of the injury to Fighters.com – a partially torn PCL, LCL and popliteus muscle – and said Carwin might not require surgery:

“The gut feeling is that he can recover without surgery if he rehabs it,” said Genet. “The initial steps are that Shane will start to rehab the knee tomorrow, and see a specialist later in the week. That’s all we really know, and we just have to see how it goes from there.”

He added that Carwin hoped to return in February. Carwin originally injured his knee back in late September, but thought he’d still be ready for the fight. Apparently he suffered a setback in training:

“He was essentially training through the injury and pushed too hard too fast.”

Nelson’s new TUF 16 Finale opponent is still unknown at this point.
