Dear UFC fan – do you want to see an elite welterweight grappling match in the octagon? Well, the UFC has got you covered on February 3rd. As if the Super Bowl card wasn’t good enough already, you can now add Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia to UFC 156. MMA Junkie has it:
A welterweight matchup between perennial contender Jon Fitch (24-4-1 MMA, 14-2-1 UFC) and Brazilian submission ace Demian Maia (17-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) is the latest addition to February’s UFC 156 event.
UFC officials today announced the new contest.
Fitch is coming off a thrilling decision win over Erick Silva at UFC 153 that earned both men $70,000 performance bonuses for fight of the night. Maia is coming a dominating submission win over Rick Story on the same card. It seemed like a natural matchup and a lot of people (including myself) were calling for it after the event was over, and I applaud Joe Silva for putting it together.
I’m not one for hyperbole, but UFC 156 looks absolutely incredible right now. Here’s a gander at the current card:
Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar [FW Title]
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida (maybe)
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Erick Silva vs. TBA
Urijah Faber vs. TBA
