Georges St. Pierre ranks Frankie Edgar as number one pound-for-pound fighter

For years now, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has been considered one of the top fighters on the mythical pound-for-pound list in MMA. He’s jockeyed for first spot beside the likes of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko, and lately, the hard-charging UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. But in a conversation with Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, GSP (who faces off with Carlos Condit at UFC 154) went off the board when he named his top P4P guy. Who is it? Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. What? Seriously? Read for yourself:

If you had to rank the top three fighters in the UFC now in order, who are they?

“No. 1 is Frankie Edgar; he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter we have.”

Wait, he’s not even a champion.

“He lost his fight to Benson Henderson only according to the judges. He was much stronger than Henderson.”

OK, who else is in the top three?

“Jon Jones is No. 2, Anderson Silva’s No. 3.”

Very interesting stuff from GSP there. Not ranking himself is pretty much par for the course for the Canadian. But Edgar over Anderson AND Jones? They are pseudo-teammates and all, and I’m with GSP that Edgar won both of the fights against Henderson, but it’s still tough to put him there no matter what. He’s number five on my personal mean-nothing list, behind Silva, Jones, GSP himself, and Mark Hunt. Just kidding, number four is Jose Aldo.

How would you rank your top five? And how delusional is GSP being by putting Edgar up top? You can check out the whole interview here.
