Over the last few years, UFC president Dana White has been very consistent with his view on Women’s MMA in the UFC. Many times over he’s claimed that the depth of talent is just too thin to justify its inclusion. Recently, we’ve started to see a change in his position. After UFC 153 Dana said he was “warming up” to the idea.
Today, Sports Illustrated got an even more definitive state from him:
It’s absolutely going to happen.
[It] could happen tomorrow, it could happen a year from now.
Considering the struggles that Zuffa’s secondary promotion Strikeforce has been facing recently, this looks to be very good news for Women’s MMA. Undoubtedly, the biggest influence on White’s decision is emerging WMMA star Ronda Rousey. Rousey has submitted all of her 9 professional and amateur opponents via first round arm bar. Additionally, she’s progressed as a recognizable personality. I have no doubts that Dana’s WMMA plans revolve around the continued success of the former Olympian.
