Lightweight: Jacob Volkmann def. Shane Roller via submission (face crank) at 2:38 of round 1.
Volkmann said he was going to submit Shane Roller and he went out and did it. Then he campaigned for president of the United States. Volkmann, a college All-American wrestler, was not expected to be able to take down the former NCAA division 1 national champion Roller, but he did. From there he took Roller’s back, applied a face crank when he couldn’t get his arm under Roller’s chin and got the tap.
Volkmann improves to 6-3 in the UFC and 15-3 overall. His setback loss to Paul Sass is the only mar on his 2-1 record as a UFC Lightweight. Roller falls to 2-4 in the UFC, 8-7 with Zuffa and 11-7 overall. He might be facing a cut.
Featherweight: Diego Nunes def. Bart Palaszewski via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)
Diego Nunes has been criticized for fighting slow and tentative and has struggled in his recent fights. He fought Bart Palaszewski like a whole new man, aggressive and effective from the opening bell. Nunes dropped Palaszewski in every round and dominated the ground fighting. However Palaszewski hung in and threatened with a guillotine in the first round and hurt Nunes standing in the third round. But Nunes came back and was in emphatic control of the bout by the end.
Nunes improves to 2-2 in the UFC, 7-3 with Zuffa and 18-3 overall. After this performance he could be getting a higher profile bout next time. Palaszewski falls to 36-16 overall, 5-5 with Zuffa and 1-2 in the UFC.
Flyweight: Darren Uyenoyama def. Phil Harris by submission (rear naked choke) at 3:38 of round 2.
The early part of the first round saw limited action. It wasn’t until about midway through the round that Harris got a nice double leg take down from the clinch. That almost led to his undoing as Uyenoyama threatened with a triangle.
Round 2 saw Harris take control of cage central but little action ensued until Uyenoyama forced a clinch but Harris dominated the standing grappling. They separated, stood briefly then clinched again and this time Uyenoyama got Harris down, took his back and locked in a rear naked choke. Harris was forced to tap.
