Before his bout with Jay Hieron at UFC on FX 5 – Bigfoot vs. Browne, Jake Ellenberger was known for his vicious aggression and 7 fight UFC win streak. Then he lost to Martin Kampmann in June and blamed the loss on his reckless abandon. He certainly rectified that against Jay Hieron, taking no chances over three slow rounds.
UFC on FX 5 Bigfoot vs. Browne Results: Jake Ellenberger def. Jay Hieron via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
Ellenberger came out cautious in the first but did manage to hurt Hieron with a combination following an uppercut. On the ground Ellenberger didn’t do a great deal.
In the second round, Hieron landed with a left hook. Then Ellenberger shot in for a double leg, took Hieron down and landed some elbows on the ground from inside Hieron’s guard.
Ellenberger came out and ducked some hooks from Hieron in the third. There were a couple of desultory take down attempts by Ellenberger and Hieron threw a few more hooks but basically no one did anything in the third round until the absolute final second when Ellenberger lunged in and seemed to hobble a retreating Hieron but it was hardly enough to make up for such a slow round.
Hieron drops to 23-6 and 0-1 in his current UFC run. Ellenberger gets back on the winning track, 7-2 in the UFC and 28-6 overall. Neither man picked up any fans with tonight’s flat performances.
