Headlining the FX portion of the prelim card, Vinny Magalhaes submitted Igor Pokrajac with a second round armbar. That slick submission gave Magalhaes his first UFC win. He now stands at 1-2 in the promotion (10-5 Overall). The loss for journeyman Igor Pokrajac drops his UFC record to 4-4 (25-9 Overall).
Early in the first round, Vinny clinched up and sought to move the fight to the ground. The fight looked to be over quickly when Magalhaes locked in a tight armbar. However, Pokrajac defended and ended up in Vinny’s dangerous guard. The Brazilian tried to attack from a high guard, but eventually let him up. In the second round, Igor made a big mistake by tripping the BJJ blackbelt, which led to him immediately defending a triangle. Vinny finished the fight with a smooth transition into an armbar.
What was the high point of the fight?
Igor’s outside leg trip that led to the finishing sequence. As soon as he hit his back, Vinny immediately attacked and never gave Pokrajac a chance to recover.
Where do they go from here?
This was the opportunity Vinny Magalhaes has been waiting for since he’s last fight for M1 almost a year ago. He seized the opportunity and grabbed the victory. He didn’t do it without still showing that he still has some holes in his striking defense, so he’ll need to move up the ladder slowly.
Igor Pokrajac was on a three fight win streak heading into UFC 152. Throughout his UFC career he’s had a mixed bag of success and failure against the mid-level talent of the Light Heavyweight division. A fight with someone like Kyle Kingsbury would be good for either man to try to get back into the win column.
Watch it now, never, or later?
Watch it now. The final sequence is an incredible display of very high level Jiu Jitsu by Vinny Magalhaes.
