Kyle Noke opened up UFC 152 with a very impressive Welterweight debut. It took him only 45 seconds to TKO Charlie Brenneman in the first round. Knowing “The Spaniard’s” reputation as a grinding wrestler Noke used his vastly superior striking to completely shut down Brenneman’s grappling game. Relying on very solid footwork to stay out of takedown range, he cracked Charlie repeatedly with lunging jabs and even surprised him with a high front kick. Finally, Noke landed a heavy straight right hand that dropped Brenneman and led to the stoppage.
Noke came into UFC 152 off back-to-back Middleweight losses to Andrew Craig and Ed Herman. This TKO victory brings him to a respectable 4-2 record since entering the UFC (20-6-1 Overall). The day’s not looking nearly as bright for Charlie Brenneman who’s now lost a second consecutive fight, leaving him 1-3 in his last four. He’s now 4-4 as a UFC fighter (15-5 Overall).
What was the high point of this fight?
In a fight this short, the obvious high point was Noke landing that powerful straight right and following up with the fight winning flurry before Charlie could recover.
Where do they go from here?
For Kyle Noke, this is a chance to establish himself as a force in his new division. Coming out of season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, Noke appeared to be finding his stride as a UFC Middleweight stringing together 3 consecutive finishes. However, he was unable to keep his momentum in his final two 185 lb. fights. Now, with a very successful Welterweight debut, he has a chance to work his way up the division. For his next fight he should get another lower ranked Welterweight like fellow UFC 152 victor Seth Baczynski.
Charlie Brenneman’s UFC future could be looking very bleak. After hitting a high water mark with an upset win over Rick Story at UFC On Versus 4, The Spaniard has only won one of his last four fights. His chin has become a huge competitive liability with 3 KO/TKO losses and his one submission loss to Erick Silva came after being rocked by strikes. On top of that, Brenneman has never been accused of having an exciting style, which has been the savior of some fighters with lackluster records.
Watch now, later, or never?
Watch it now. It was a short and exciting fight with a somewhat questionable stoppage.
