On a night that gave boxing fans a lot to take in, WBC Super Welterweight Champion Canelo Alvarez looked nearly flawless, taking apart Josesito Lopez in a 5th round TKO victory at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, Saturday.
Alvarez’s power, speed and precision was on display all night, resulting in three knockdowns at various points throughout the fight. Especially standout was Alvarez’s attacks to the body, of which one shot to the liver dropped Lopez in the second round.
The end came in the fifth round when referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight with just five seconds left after Alvarez had Lopez hurt against the ropes following a power right hand. The 28-year-old Lopez (30-5) was game all night, but was undersized and overmatched against the bigger Alvarez.
The highlight of the fight was near the end of the fourth round when the 22-year-old Alvarez (41-0-1) unleashed a ridiculous series of punches that preceded the fight’s final knockdown — a perfect culmination of everything that makes Alvarez one of the sport’s best young fighters.
In the third round, Alvarez dropped Lopez with a right hand one minute into the round, closing a three-punch combination.
