Rumor: Wanderlei Silva Vs. Chael Sonnen Possible For UFC 153 Main Event

As you know by now, UFC 153 capsized and doesn’t have its main event or co-main event. Jose Aldo has a foot injury and is out of his title fight with Frankie Edgar, and Quinton Jackson’s shoulder injury sees him out of his fight with Glover Teixeira. The UFC is scrambling for a replacement main event knowing that while their other main card fights are great, they aren’t main event worthy. A possible new main event could be a catchweight bout between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen. (Via Fighters Only)

A fight between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen is a possible replacement main event for UFC 153 on October 13.

Silva has publicly voiced willingness to meet Sonnen if the UFC officially offers the match and sources say that the bout is under consideration. It would take place at a catchweight of 195lbs – between middleweight and light-heavy – to reflect the short-notice nature of the bout.

Wanderlei was also interviewed by Portal do Vale Tudo today, expressing his interest both in fighting Chael Sonnen and competing in Rio. (Translation also from Fighters Only)

“I accept to fight any one and with him it would be tasteful. It would be a bout that people would like to see. I wasn’t offered it yet, but if the boss needs me and I can contribute to make the fans happy, I would feel so glad.”

Chael Sonnen is scheduled to fight Forrest Griffin at UFC 155, but that hasn’t stopped him from angling for other fights. He offered to step in on short notice to fight Jon Jones at UFC 151, and you know the rest by now. Sonnen and Wanderlei have been pretty verbal in the past so the trash-talking could be quite entertaining, but personally I feel this fight would be a Sonnen walkover if not a ground-and-pound stoppage.

Again, this is only a rumor and Wanderlei himself said this fight wasn’t offered to him, but the UFC would probably accept anything that comes their way within reason to headline this PPV.
