This weekend features a major boxing showdown as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. faces Sergio Martinez. The fight goes down Saturday, September 15 on HBO PPV.
Heading into the fight, Martinez is the definite favorite. That’s because the 37 year old fighter is, quite simply, one of the best in the world. With a record of 49-2-2, Martinez is regularly ranked right alongside Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao (and, after this weekend, Andre Ward) as one of boxing’s pound for pound elite. Yet he doesn’t share the same high profile among more casual fans. So, to get ready for Martinez vs. Chavez Jr., here is a look at one of Sergio Martinez’s most remarkable wins – his 2010 defeat of Paul Williams.
When Martinez and Williams met in 2010, many were expecting a classic, and for good reason. The two men had faced off once before, in 2009. That fight was a 12 round war that was heralded as one of the year’s best fights. Williams escaped from that fight with a Majority Decision win, but it was clear that a rematch was needed. One year later, each man had notched another win (Martinez over Kelly Pavlik, Williams over Kermit Cintron) and the rematch was set. Only things did not go quite as planned.

Seemingly everyone in attendance was primed for another epic war, but Sergio Martinez had other plans, as his beautiful left hand separated Williams from consciousness in round 2.
Watching the fight live, the announcers are clearly viewing it in favor of Williams, and seem to regard Martinez’s KO as almost a lucky punch, but that’s far from the case. Post-fight, Martinez revealed that his camp saw that Williams had a tendency to drop his right hand in exchanges, leaving his head exposed for the big left. Martinez swings that left throughout the fight, eventually landing it clean. It’s an excellent performance and a remarkable KO from one of the sport’s best.
