There’s a lot of great boxing going on right now, including one of the most anticipated fights of 2012 – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez on HBO PPV this Saturday, September 15. It’s an intriguing fight on many levels, and HBO is fittingly giving it the full promotional push, including their superb 24/7 series.
Episode 1 of Chavez Jr vs. Martinez 24/7 is now online, and it’s a good one. At least for this episode, they’ve put the focus largely on the story of each man’s background: Martinez as the hard-working fighter who brought himself up from a childhood spent in heavy poverty in Argentina; Chavez as the boy born with the silver spoon in his mouth thanks to his legendary father. It’s a valid story, and one that adds an interesting aspect to the fight.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the episode is how those contrasting backgrounds play out in each man’s training style, particularly in the case of Chavez. His trainer Freddie Roach describes him not sticking to a schedule and instead simply training whenever he wants, even if that means calling Roach at 2:00 in the morning. Overall, Roach is very positive about Chavez, but it’s a telling detail.
