Tonight, Bellator’s second annual Summer Series comes to an end with Bellator 73 in Mississippi. Earlier this month, the event suffered a big loss when Featherweight champion Pat Curran sustained an injury and his fight against Patricio Freire was pulled from the card. However, the card remains strong featuring both the Light Heavyweight and Bantamweight tournament finals.
Light Heavyweight Final: Attila Vegh Vs. Travis Wiuff
Vegh (27-4-2) made his Bellator debut in April, picking up a split decision win over Dan Spohn. That earned him a slot in the Bellator light heavyweight tournament, where he advanced to the finals by finishing Zelg Galesic by submission and taking another close split decision over Emmanuel Newton. Wiuff (68-14, 1 NC) has fought everywhere, but made the biggest impact in Bellator. He shocked Bellator light heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu in a non-title fight by taking a decision, and advanced to the finals by knocking out Chris Davis and winning a decision over Tim Carpenter.
Bantamweight Final: Luis Nogueira Vs. Marcos Galvao
Nogueira (14-2) was eliminated from the season five featherweight tournament in the first round by Ed West, but rebounded to earn entry into the season six tourney. He scored a major upset in the first round by taking a decision over Alexis Vila, and followed it up with another upset knockout win over Hiroshi Nakamura to make the finals. Galvao (12-5-1) made his Bellator debut in a close fight with Joe Warren, which he lost by debated decision. He made the semi-finals on the season 5 tourney, but got bounced by Alexis Vila. This time around he defeated Ed West and Travis Marx by decision to get into the finals.
The main card also features a heavyweight bout between Ryan Martinez and Mike Wessel, and a light heavyweight bout between Mike Mucitelli and Matt Van Buren. Bloody Elbow will be offering live play by play and coverage of tonight’s event.
