A South Carolina paper is reporting that amateur MMA fighter has died after a bout in Mount Pleasant, Charleston County. According to the Post and Courier 30-year-old Tyrone Mims of Augusta, Ga was pronounced dead at Medical University Hospital following his bout with Blake Poore at Conflict MMA Promotions: Fight Night @ The Point VI.

The P&C spoke to Deputy Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay:

Lindsay said Mims had just completed a fight and was having some problems. He was being monitored at the venue when he became unresponsive, Lindsay said.

Charleston County EMS Director Don Lundy said paramedics took a patient from the Shrine Temple, the scene of “Fight Night at the Point VI,” to MUSC at 8:36 p.m.

The hospital’s life-saving efforts were not successful, Lindsay said. Mims was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m.

The UG has more:

Blake Poore and Tyrone Mimms (sic) made their amateur debuts, on the second fight of what was scheduled to be a 14-fight card.

According to fans in attendance, Mimms came out strong in the first, but gassed out in the second round. The referee stopped the fight. Mimms went backstage where he was stricken, apparently of a heart attack.

The rest of the card was apparently cancelled after Mims was stricken. Bloody Elbow will have more on this story as information becomes available. Our sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mims.
