Demetrious Johnson Suffers Hernia At UFC On FX, Needs Surgery

UFC flyweight Demetrious Johnson did what he set out to do at UFC on FX 3 last Friday, defeating Ian McCall in their rematch to determine who would advance to fight Joseph Benavidez for the first-ever 125-pound title in the promotion’s history.

But the win came at a price. On Inside MMA Monday, Johnson revealed that he suffered a hernia during the bout that will require surgery. If he is able to get the surgery taken care of Friday, he expects to be on the shelf for two weeks which shouldn’t affect the title fight to happen this fall as expected.

The 25-year-old Johnson (15-2-1) will challenge for a UFC belt for the second time in his career as he was previously unsuccessful against 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz last October. He dropped down to the new flyweight division and fought to a draw against McCall in March due to a commission scoring tabulation error that prevented a fourth round from happening.
