Welcome to another edition of the Bloody Elbow News Roundup. Despite the fact that there was a UFC event this past weekend, the world of MMA wasn’t exactly full of interesting news. In fact, it was downright boring. Things picked up today a bit though and we’ll go through some of the stuff you might have missed. Starting….now.
It’s pretty clear that Rory MacDonald is one of the top prospects in the UFC welterweight division. The 22-year-old destroyed Che Mills at UFC 145 and wants bigger fish for his next fight. Who might that be? Future Hall of Famer B.J. Penn would fit the bill for Rory, even though he’s currently retired. MacDonald expressed his desire to fight Penn on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani earlier today:
“Right now I feel there’s a guy that I want to fight before he leaves the sport and that’s B.J. Penn,” he said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “That’s a guy I really want to fight. I respect him a lot. He’s a legend and I think it’d be a really good matchup for me to have that fight in Toronto.”
Rory did make it clear he wasn’t calling out Penn, merely suggesting a great fight. I highly doubt it would happen, but it would definitely be something I’d watch.
Changing subjects a bit, y’all probably know by now that BE top-five P4P most hated fighter Jon Fitch has pulled out of his bout with Aaron Simpson at UFC on Fuel 4. Fitch took to his Youtube account to apologize to fans, and let everyone know what actually happened. He has a partial tear of his ACL and will be out about four weeks apparently.
He did mention something else quite interesting as well – his documentary Such Great Heights, which he’s being trying to distribute for ages, will FINALLY come out in the US on June 12th. It will be available via On Demand and DVD, which is great. Go ahead and hate, I don’t care – Jon Fitch rules.
After the jump, Michael Bisping will tell you why he deserves a title shot if Chael Sonnen can beat Anderson Silva (somewhere in Utah at this very moment Jeremy Horn is yelling “ME TOO!”), and see some funny outtakes from Silva’s recent Budweiser commercial.
So Mr. Bisping spoke to ESPN UK about the title shot he never seems to get and through some strange logic, he thinks he might get one if the Gangster from West Linn claims the belt on July 7th:
“Dana called me after the Sonnen fight and I asked him, ‘Where does this leave me in terms of the title?’ He said to me, ‘In fairness Mike, you won the fight.’ Not that he sent me my win bonus! I asked, ‘Where does this leave me for the title shot?’ And he never said you don’t get one. He said, ‘We need to figure it out.’ When speaking to Joe Silva, he said it all depends on what happens between Sonnen and Anderson. He said if Anderson wins, I might be sitting around for a while. So if Chael wins I might get to fight [for the title]. But I haven’t been told anything official. Since Dan Henderson, I haven’t lost a fight. The Wanderlei fight I was robbed of a decision, the Chael fight I was robbed, so it’s going back to 2009. If you take those out, I haven’t lost in seven or eight fights.”
So, let me get this straight. The guy who is 5-3 in his last 8 can just say “I was robbed” a few times and that means he might a title shot gifted to him? Coming off a loss? Uh, okay Bisping. Whatever you say.
We’ll close out tonight on a humorous note. A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Brookhouse brought you the video of a funny Budweiser commercial featuring UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and his BFF Steven Seagal. Budweiser Brazil’s Youtube page has now released two short videos of outtakes from the commercial. I suggest watching the commercial again to refresh your memory, then checking these out. They’re goofy, but they definitely made me laugh. Enjoy.
